Earlier this month, I attended the Smart Protein project webinar, an overview of their plant-based food sector report. They analyzed the data from ten European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Overall, from October 2017 to September 2020, the European plant-based sector grew by 49%, with cheese knowing the most impressive rate: a 112% growth!
Here are the key findings for France (please note that, when analyzing plant-based meat, they included vegan and vegetarian products).
We can notice a growth in plant-based food in France: from October 2017 to September 2020, the overall plant-based food sales value grew 21%, with an 8% growth from October 2019 to September 2020.
This growth is led by plant-based milk (mainly soya, almond and then oat). It is followed by plant-based yoghurt (mainly flavoured, plain and then bifidus), then by plant-based meat (mainly refrigerated, ambient and then frozen), with the latest knowing the most important increase.
Specifically, from October 2019 to September 2020:
- the overall plant-based sales increased by 8%
- plant-based meat sales increased by 9%
- plant-based milk sales increased by 8%
- plant-based yoghurt sales increased by 6% (the 2nd country in this sector, after Germany)
Overall, who is buying? Flexitarians are the main target customer. To meet their needs, plant-based products need to have some qualities: be tasty, healthy, convenient, and familiar. Regarding the price issue, it is still a criterion that consumers take into account, and the total sales growth will be even more impressive when plant-based products prices equal their omnivorous counterparts’.
You can find all the data, for France and the other countries, in their full report:
